Diaphysis: tubular shaft that runs between the proximal and distal ends of the long bone
Epiphysis: wide section at each end of the long bone; filled with spongy bone and red bone marrow
Spongy Bone (Cancellous): trabeculated osseus tissue ; it is lightweight but still provides strong support
Compact Bone: dense osseus tissue that can withstand compression forces
Medulla Cavity: hollow region of the Diaphysis; filled with yellow bone marrow
Red Bone Marrow: connective tissue in the interior cavity of a bone (epiphysis) where hematopoiesis takes place
Yellow Bone Marrow: connective tissue in the interior cavity of a bone (diaphysis) where fat is stored
Endosteum: delicate membrane lining the medulla cavity
Periosteum: fibrous membrane covering the outer surface of bone and continuous with ligaments
Epiphyseal plate: sheet of hyaline cartilage in the metaphysis of an immature bone; replaced by tissue as the organ grow in length
